Chapter Ten

Ewon was fuming by the time he walked Jari to his hut. He knew Emyd was lying through his teeth but couldn’t prove a thing. “Did anyone hurt you?” Ewon asked as soon as they reached his garden. “I didn’t believe a word Emyd was telling me.”

When they reached the garden, Ewon stopped Jari and looked the man over, reassuring himself that his little wolf was fine. Ewon thought he was going to die when he saw Jari running out of the woods, four lions running him to ground. Three had taken off as soon as they spotted Ewon and that told him—along with Jari’s wolf form running for his life—that Emyd was up to no good. He never wanted to experience that level of fear again.

“I’m okay,” Jari said, but Ewon could feel a fine tremor running through the smaller man. “I was just scared when those four lions began to chase me.”

Ewon harrumphed. “Then tell me what really happened since we both know Emyd was telling tall tales.”

“That’s an understatement,” Jari replied as he used his hand to brush his long, dark hair aside. “He came here and told me he had a picnic set up for us. For one, I didn’t want to go but he manacled my wrist and made me leave with him. Secondly, I thought it strange he wanted to eat in the woods.”

The longer Jari spoke, and the longer Ewon listened, the more outraged be became.

“Then Dirk appeared,” Jari said as he took a seat on the garden path, plucking at a few blades of grass. Ewon sat down next to the man, wishing he could have stopped Emyd from taking Jari in the first place.

“He had two goons with him. I’m telling you, Emyd sucks as an actor. I could tell it was all a setup. He pretended like he was defending me, but”—Jari shook his head, his green eyes filled with something close to relief that things hadn’t gotten out of control—“even a blind man would have been able to see through the bullshit.”

Jari grabbed Ewon’s hand. “I don’t think Emyd will stop harassing me as long as you and I—” The smaller man glanced away, a fierce blush spreading like a wildfire across his face and neck, his ears turning dark red.

Ewon knew exactly what Jari was talking about. Until the two of them consummated their relationship, Emyd would continue his unwanted advances. That was not how Ewon wanted to claim Jari, not for those reasons.

“You would have us enter into a pairing just to stop Emyd?” If that was all Jari wanted, then Ewon had gravely misjudged the small wolf. But they had been growing closer even before Emyd showed his scandalous hand. That couldn’t be the case for Jari wanting Ewon to pair with him.

Jari looked as if Ewon had slapped him in the face. His lips parted as his eyes grew wide, his face paling. “Gods, no. I’m not going to lie and say it wouldn’t help us get rid of him, but I”— Jari let Ewon’s hand go—“I want you, Ewon.
